A Closer Look on House Construction Materials: Hollow Blocks

HOLLOW BLOCKS

A concrete masonry unit, also known as hollow block, is considered one of the most versatile house construction materials available in the Philippines as there are a wide variety of house finishes that can be achieved using them. The size of a standard hollow block is 20cm (width) x 40cm (length) x 20cm (height). Due to its big dimensions and load-carrying capacıty, hollow blocks play a vital role in the construction industry especially when it comes to building partitions and internal and external walls in just a short period.

MAKING PROCESS

Hollow blocks are made with a machine that mixes volcanic ash, granite rubble, sand, broken glass, brick, concrete, hardened cement, expanded clay, river gravel, crushed stone, and sawdust. The machine can work for 24 hours along with different automation levels and capacities. When the desired consistency is achieved, the mixture is transferred to a mold with standard sizes. Once the molded hollow blocks are dried, they are now ready to be used for construction.

PURPOSE OF HOLES

Wondering why hollow blocks have this emptiness inside? Those holes are a great help in terms of thermal and sound insulation. Having those holes also allow these house construction materials to be lighter, in such a way that they do not add to the total weight of the structure too much.

ADVANTAGES OF USING HOLLOW BLOCKS

Hollow blocks are important masonry units in construction and these advantages explain why:

  • Lightweight
  • Easy-to-use
  • Cost-efficient
  • High fire resistance
  • Good thermal and sound resistance
  • 20+ years lifespan
  • Durable
  • Low maintenance
